Phoenix Inspection Systems Limited is pleased to announce the appointment of Chris Canham as Technical Sales Engineer, responsible for developing new sales streams across the UK, developing sales strategies with a technical influence, creating new business opportunities, and generating sales growth of Phoenix ISL solutions.
Chris joins the Phoenix sales team with a depth of knowledge gained in Technical Sales roles and as a qualified Senior NDT Technician and Tube Inspector. Chris is experienced in standard and specialist NDT methods, working in the oil and gas industry on offshore platforms and FPSO’s, refineries, oil and gas terminals, chemical plants, and alternative energy power plants.
Commenting on the appointment, Sales Manager Andrew Brewis said: “Chris is an excellent addition to the Phoenix sales team and can draw on his invaluable experience when assisting new and existing customers with technical sales issues and applying his in-field experience to provide expert product knowledge of Phoenix ISL’s innovative solutions to NDT professionals.”
Phoenix Inspection Systems Limited have further developed their ultrasonic NDT solution for the automated inspection of train wheel hollow axle sets, typically used in high speed passenger trains, where lighter weight components have a distinct advantage.
Trains travel at speeds in excess of 200km/h and subject their hollow axles to increased strain risking the structural integrity and reliability. The axle life is a crucial part of both the safety and economic performance of a train and hollow axles need to be inspected periodically, using an ultrasonic testing solution to detect potential internal defects and cracks in the outer surface. Early stages of detection can improve the efficiency in the use of axles by extending their life. However, inspection which takes a train out of service impacts on the economic aspects of a train’s operation.
The Axle Bore Scanner has been developed by Phoenix ISL over the years and the most recent automated design allows fast and efficient inspection of the axle in-situ from the trackside, reducing inspection time and costs.
The system is compact, portable and easy to use by a single operator and can inspect axle bores from Ø25mm to Ø110mm by changing the probe head to the appropriate diameter. Inspecting bores of any length is possible using interchangeable lances to give the required stroke length. With two motorised axes for axial and circumferential motion through the bore, the Axle Bore Scanner can inspect either by helical, helicoidal or raster scan patterns (370° x 2150mm).

Following the first successful collaboration between Phoenix Inspection Systems Limited and Eclipse Scientific, the partnership has added the range of Phoenix ISL TOFD probes and wedges to ES BeamTool 9 software, enabling customers to easily set up their scan plan.
BeamTool’s Time-Of-Flight Diffraction support provides tools to visualize and confirm zonal coverage. TOFD techniques can be automatically annotated with cross-over dimensions and dead-zone depiction. Probe Center Separation (PCS) can easily be defined by selecting the cross-over depth required and BeamTool automatically positions the probes to target the inspection requirements.
The latest addition to the BeamTool software ensures customers can configure their Phoenix ISL TOFD probes and wedges to provide the best scanning coverage possible through great simulation.

Time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) transducers and wedges generate refracted longitudinal waves in steel. These highly damped longitudinal wave probes provide a high resolution and performance suitable for ultrasonic testing on welds. Phoenix manufactures composite and non-composite TOFD transducers of varying frequencies from 2MHz to 15MHz and crystal diameters ranging from approximately 3mm (0.125″) to 20mm (0.787″). To accompany the Phoenix range is a wide selection of TOFD wedges manufactured from durable plastic, brass or stainless steel to suit varying inspection environments.

BeamTool was designed to meet the modern operator’s need for speed. Phased array technique development is more complex than that for conventional ultrasonic inspection and as such requires effective software tools to help define the inspection approach. Successful inspections start with a plan and new and existing users of Phoenix ISL’s phased array probes can now benefit from the partnership with BeamTool to make it easy to model, validate and document their phased array inspection plans with confidence.

BeamTool’s innovative approach to phased array enables linear, sectorial and an informative reference cursor option to be represented, helping to clearly convey weld coverage, HAZ coverage and probe position, in addition to critical dimensions. The beamset parameters dialog displays a visual representation of the transducer elements that are used to form the beamset. Beam spread visualization allows you to more accurately see your beamset coverage for a specific dB drop, and near field visualization ensures that any focusing being performed is within the near field. Phoenix Inspection Systems Limited has announced that it has recently been awarded a contract by Framatome to supply custom-design scanning solutions for non-destructive testing inspections within the primary circuit of Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) and Pressurised Water Reactors (PWR) within nuclear power plants in Finland.
The automated solutions will be deployed inside the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) using remotely operated vehicles to inspect branch nozzles. In-service inspections are critical to monitor and maintain the integrity of the nozzles and to ensure the performance and efficiency of the reactor.
Phoenix ISL is proud to be awarded this challenging project and with over 35 years’ experience in developing and manufacturing customised solutions for the nuclear power industry; Framatome will benefit from the experience and extensive expertise of the team at Phoenix ISL to deliver a fleet of efficient ultrasonic NDT scanning solutions.

Phoenix Inspection Systems Limited has recently supplied a number of Multi-Skip or M-Skip probe and wedge solutions for wall thickness measurement in pipelines.
M-Skip is an advanced ultrasonic corrosion detection technique that enables NDT inspection of inaccessible components due to obstructions, such as pipe supports, clamps and saddles. M-Skip provides operators with wall thickness measurement without the need to move obstructions, which can prove costly and time consuming.
Andrew Brewis, Sales Manager at Phoenix ISL said: “The M-Skip solution is a current example of custom and application specific solutions manufactured by Phoenix. If nothing in our standard range suits a particular inspection requirement we can make a small modification to a standard product or design a full customised solution to suit a particular application.”
